Tragedy in December

At the beginning of December, in what was a horrific accident, five high school students lost their lives. It devastated the small community I work in, and was truly a tragedy words cannot explain. Taking photographs that week was extraordinarily difficult. I tried my best to walk the fine line between making news pictures and giving space to those who were grieving. And a remarkable effort by those in the community to pull together and support one another, raising funds for the families affected, was humbling to witness.

Lost Saxophone

Donald Jones goes through the rubble of his former storage building and music workshop where he lost a baby grand piano, a console piano and a baritone saxophone in a blaze. "I might be able to find it and salvage it when the fire department gives me the okay." Jones said of the baritone saxophone, which he believes is buried somewhere under the debris. Jones, known as Jonesy by his friends, plays in the Chambersburg jazz band New Horizons.

Of late there's been calls of "structure fire" coming through the office scanner almost on a daily basis. I can feel pretty bad about photographing the effort to fight the fire afterward. When I'm working, my mindset clicks into "Try to Make good pictures" mode, and sometimes I neglect to remember somebody has just suffered a great deal of property damage, or maybe worse. It's good to remember at times that I should tread carefully at these scenes.

It was very fascinating to spend a significant amount of time observing America from a completely different, yet so familiar place.

Posting has been delayed around here lately because I've been busy transitioning from one place to another again. I just finished my six month internship with the Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina and traveled back to Pittsburgh and Ohio to spend some downtime and organize, put together a book, shoot some weddings, and get some new work under my belt. I've gotten a brand new digital SLR and I've been photographing a lot since I've been back - for now, my computer is broken, and editing is taking a very long time on a Macintosh G4 with a 21 megapixel digital camera. So I hope to update the blog as frequently as I can with that being said until I buy a new computer sometime next month.
